How to Check a Used iPhone Before Buying in the UAE

A used iPhone can be a great deal in the UAE — if you check the right things before you pay. A locked or blacklisted phone is effectively useless, so run through this checklist before handing over any money.

Before you meet

• Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud. Have them remove their Apple account (Settings → [name] → Sign Out) and erase the phone before you meet. If the phone still asks for someone else’s Apple ID on setup, it is Activation Locked — do not buy it.
• Request the IMEI. Ask for the IMEI number (dial *#06# or check Settings → General → About) so you can confirm the model and check it is not reported lost or blacklisted.

Check it in person

• Activation. Insert your own SIM and confirm the phone activates cleanly and connects to the network.
• Battery health. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Anything around 80% or above is reasonable for a used device; much lower means a battery replacement soon.
• Screen and body. Look for cracks, dead pixels, discolouration and frame damage. Test the touchscreen across the whole display.
• Cameras, Face/Touch ID, buttons and charging. Test the front and rear cameras, biometrics, all buttons, speakers, microphone and charging port.

Confirm it is not stolen or blacklisted

A blacklisted IMEI can be blocked from networks, leaving you with a phone that cannot make calls. Verify the IMEI status and be cautious of any seller who will not share it or seems evasive about how they got the phone.

Pay a fair price

Compare the asking price against similar listings for the same model, storage and condition. Used iPhones from private sellers are typically well below retail, and many listings are negotiable — message the seller through the app to make a reasonable offer.
